'Stop Worrying, Start Understanding' - Dementia Awareness Week...

With the stark statistic released at the start of Dementia Awareness Week today saying nearly two-thirds of us worry about dementia - either about ourselves or somebody else developing the condition later in life – it is perhaps no coincidence that this morning, RCHTs nurse consultant for older people, Frazer Underwood, was hosting an education session on dementia for RCHT volunteers.

“Our volunteers have regular contact with patients with dementia and they can play a big part in helping us to understand their needs and the familiar things in their lives that we can use to help make their stay in hospital less daunting. Having a better understanding of dementia and how to deal with the different symptoms it presents is very important for our volunteers,” said Frazer. (Read more|)

Fact Of The Day

Patient View

Dementia is one of the biggest challenges facing the NHS...

There are 200,000 people in the UK diagnosed with dementia, a little under 20,000 of those are under 50 years old, living with early onset dementia. It's thought this is only around one third of the number of people who actually have dementia.

Keeping healthy and active, in body and mind helps to reduce the risk of dementia.

From a cardiology patient at WCH...

"The efficient treatment I received was quick and prompt. I was under constant review all the time and everyone who I came into contact with were pleasant and very professional.

"[I would have liked] more information of illness and then treatment."
