People living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are being invited to get involved, have their say and help shape local hospital services.
Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust (RCHT) is holding elections for its new Council of Governors as a step towards NHS Foundation Trust authorisation in 2013 and is now seeking nominations.
As an NHS Foundation Trust, RCHT will have greater freedom to plan local services, enabling it to respond to the specific needs and wishes of the local community.
Patients, staff, the public and carers are all invited to become members of RCHT. The members are then able to nominate themselves for election to the Council of Governors to represent the views of the local community. Governors will also help build links between the Trust and the community it serves.
The Governor nomination process is starting on the 6th December until the 21st December 2012. People can still join to become members and nominate themselves until the 21st December.
The Trust’s public governors will represent five geographic areas which are named constituencies. The candidate(s) with the most votes (from the Trust members) will become the elected Governor(s) in that constituency. The full Council of Governors will consist of 11 elected public governors, 5 staff governors and 5 appointed partner governors.
Public elections are to be held in the following constituencies:

Chairman Martin Watts said:
“This is a significant moment in the history of Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. Foundation Trust status and the election of a Council of Governors is a great opportunity for our local community to engage with their hospital. We want our members and Governors to hold us to account, have a greater say in the way the hospital is run and to help us ensure we provide a first class service for the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”
To stand for election, candidates must be registered as a member of the Trust and can put themselves forward for the elections to be held in January. Membership can be completed at the same time as nomination. Candidates will be asked to prepare a short election statement describing why they want to be elected as a Governor of RCHT.
